Jill Myer

Drawing/Painting

Jill Myer works in many mediums, primarily encaustic wax and watercolor, while also flirting with digital, graphite, gouache, yarn, and her spinning wheel. Myer resides on the Oregon Coast, where she spends more time outside than in. Myer draws inspiration from nature and is equally inspired by the fragile blue of a robin egg found on a forest path and the power of dark and foreboding clouds gathering over the roaring ocean. Myer can be found taking inspirational photos on the beach mid-rainstorm while the rain relentlessly tests every seam of rain gear or in the forest at sunrise, squinting at dew drops in the sun. She is most content in paint-covered overalls with soil under her fingernails and a snack close at hand. Myer lives with her husband and their dog, Roxy, who is equally as dedicated to being on the beach in the middle of a rainstorm.

Jill uses encaustic paint to build up layers of texture, depth, and color for the eye to wander around in. Once the painting is blocked in, she carves into the wax and adds more texture by heating, fusing, and adding more wax. Oil paint, or a pastel layer is brushed and pushed into the cracks, carvings, and air bubbles, adding gestural movements and urgency.
