Holly Freifeld

Photography

Holly Freifeld grew up in California, where exploring tidepools, creeks, the desert, and their backyard were among her family’s favorite pastimes. As a result, she was an aspiring naturalist from an early age. Her graduate education—she holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Oregon—and her 30-year career as a conservation biologist have afforded her with opportunities to live and work in the Pacific Northwest, Florida, Hawaii (including the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands), Ecuador, and American Samoa, and to travel widely in South America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, and Africa. Immersion in and care for the natural world, whether through research, professional conservation work, hiking and birdwatching, or photography, lies at the heart of all she does. She has lived in Portland with her husband and indoor cats since 2011.

Holly uses a Canon EOS R mirrorless digital camera with a 35mm lens. She processes her photos lightly using the Macintosh Photos application. Prints are made from the final photo files by Bay Photo Lab in Scotts Valley, California, on the photographic paper of her choosing. She constructs cards and matted prints herself; Luke's Frame Shop in Portland frames her work to her specifications.
