Duncan Neilson

Photograhy

Born in 1943 Duncan Neilson has had a lifelong interest in birds and began trying to photograph them while still in grade school. That process resulted in a deeper study of photography, expanding to landscape and flower subject matter as well as birds, much of it under the mentorship of the renowned Portland, Oregon photographers: Charles, Leonard, and Ray Conkling, who provided his education in the field. His primary products are high quality exhibition prints, ranging from hand made and signed photo note cards to large 40 x 60 inch wall display prints. He has worked through the evolution of photography from large format view camera film work to modern digital techniques. His work highlights the beauty and wonder of nature, the two primary drivers of human engagement with the natural world. His goal is to increase our recognition of the deep psychological and emotional connection we have with that world, which is a requisite to its preservation. Duncan has exhibited his work in multiple shows including the Wild Arts Festival in Portland and the Migratory Bird Festival (featured artist in 2002) in Burns, Oregon, and most recently, the Oregon Society of Artists in Portland. He is represented by two galleries, the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, and the Freed Gallery in Lincoln City, Oregon. His work is featured in multiple office and hospital spaces and in private homes.

He makes high quality photographic prints from his own scanned negatives (scanned by him) or processed digital RAW files (processed by him) using archival museum rag paper and archival pigment inks. These vary in size from hand-made and signed photo note cards to 40x60 inch wall display prints. He uses a wide-format digital printer and does all of the printing himself. For display prints, he dry-mounts the prints onto archival matte board to make them frame-ready.
