Cheryl Brown is fascinated with old maps, books, sheet music, scraps of paper and fabric, wrappers and ribbons, and sees possibilities— color, value, texture—in everything. The challenge of taking things that have been cast aside and repurposing them to new life in her art excites and inspires her. Looking deeper at what is mundane and presenting it in a new way is the goal of her work. She hopes that her work challenges the observer to take a second look at the ordinary and see it in a new perspective.
A self-proclaimed “bird nerd” and “map geek”, Cheryl spends a lot of time (and money) feeding the birds that visit her backyard sanctuary as well as seeking native birds in her travels. She considers herself fortunate to have amassed quite a collection of old maps from estate sales, generous customers and the local library sorting room…but she is always on the lookout for more!
