White-backed Woodpecker
White-backed Woodpecker by Vil Sandi

Explore the primeval Białowieża Forest and Biebrza Marshes of western Poland! The trip starts in Warsaw, but we will be transferring to Gdansk for 2 days where we will visit Długi Targ, the old market place, the famous Malbork Castle, bird the mouth of the Vistula River and the Hel Peninsula, a is a 35-km-long sandbar peninsula in northern Poland separating the Bay of Puck from the open Baltic Sea.

On the drive over to the Belarus border we will stop at Druzno Lake, famous for its wealth of breeding species including River Warbler, Ferruginous Duck and Lesser Spotted Eagle. The Białowieża Forest is one of last and largest remaining parts of immense primeval forest that once stretched the European plain. With luck we will be able to see the European Bison, as the forest is home of over 600 of these critters. The forest has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the specialties of the area include White-backed, European Three-toed, Black, Gray-headed and Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Corn Crake, Red-breasted Flycatcher, River and Barred Warbler. One evening we will be visiting a Great Snipe lek.

The Biebrza Marshes are an extensive stretch of marshes. There we will be looking for the evening-singing Aquatic Warbler, Citrine Wagtail and Bluethroat. An excursion to the Siemianówka Reservoir should yield gulls, terns, Black Stork and White-tailed Eagles. With luck we will see a Moose.

Our final day we will in Warsaw exploring Old Town, the Royal Castle and either the Chopin Museum or the Copernicus Science Center.
