Late summer is spectacular on the northern Oregon Coast, with some luck we will find the best weather of the year while we search for staging terns, gulls and pelicans, migrating shorebirds returning from arctic breeding grounds, and young songbirds congregating where there is abundant food.  We will start at Haystack Rock to look for Tufted Puffins, Black Oystercatchers and Harlequin Duck.  We'll make a brief stop at The Cove in Seaside to look for early rock-pipers and any activity over the ocean.  The Necanicum Estuary is an important feeding and resting area for California and Heerman's Gulls, Caspian Terns and Brown Pelicans and a variety of shorebird species may be found too.  The Astoria Mitigation Bank may have a variety of ducks and shorebirds. We will look for Marbled Godwits, Whimbrel and some years Elegant Tern at the Hammond Boat Basin. If time allows, we will visit a variety of habitats at the Fort Stevens State Park to search for Wrentit, Red Crossbill and any other species we have yet to see.
