Fall Comes Swiftly in NW Portland

There are plenty of fall traditions, but in Northwest Portland, as the leaves begin to fall, people gather to watch thousands of tiny birds fill the sky like a chirping, black cloud above Chapman Elementary School.

Throughout September, migrating Vaux's Swifts will stop and roost in at least half a dozen sites in Portland on their way from British Columbia to Central and South America, with Chapman's brick chimney drawing the largest population in the world, according to the Audubon Society of Portland.
