Marbled Murrelet at Sea - Thomas Hamer

Where: Yachats Commons, 1555 Hwy 101, Yachats, Oregon

Join the 14th annual Marbled Murrelet community science survey on a spectacular stretch of Oregon's coast. Training will be provided, so no prior experience is needed. RSVP required! We are offering two separate trainings – join us for one or both, if you’d like.

Oregon State University ornithologist and Marbled Murrelet expert Kim Nelson and Paul Engelmeyer of Portland Audubon and manager of Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary will lead the survey. Staging will take place in scenic Yachats, on the central coast of Oregon, and we'll survey for endangered Marbled Murrelets in the Cummins, Ten Mile, and Yachats landscape. This area includes the ‘Globally Significant’ Central Coast Murrelet Important Bird Area, with 100,000 acres of murrelet habitat in the Siuslaw National Forest and adjacent near-shore waters.

We will be viewing and discussing old-growth forest habitat as well as the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and Seabird Protection Area. During the morning surveys, we will see and/or hear murrelets on both breeding territory and in their near-shore feeding areas.

Partners: Oregon State University
